“My sheep hear my voice; I know them and they follow me.”
John 10:27 NAB
The forms of communication today are so abundant that here is absolutely no reason why you can’t contact just about anyone in the world. But there is one being that we know we can always contact: God. Through prayer, we have a direct line to Him. Although being on the receiving line of that conversation, can be a bit harder to decipher. Especially because it is different for everyone. Some people might actually here His voice, others may just get a feeling in their soul, others find signs throughout their daily lives, sometimes He speaks through others directly. But for me, there are 3 ways that I know something is coming straight from my Father in Heaven.
“Everyone who listens to these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who build his house on rock.”
Matthew 7:24 NAB
1. It is all I can think about
When something completely consumes my mind, it is usually something God is trying to tell me. Before we decided to start trying for another baby, I honestly wasn’t sure if I would ever be ready to have another. I couldn’t imagine going through what we went through with SJ again, or going through the pain of labor and delivery again. Then all of a sudden, it was absolutely all I could think about. The same thing happened when I decided to start this blog. It is like God gives me a message and makes it completely consume me until I acknowledge it and do something about it. So if something is weighing heavy on your mind and heart, chances are it is for a reason.
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, on your own intelligence do not rely; In all your ways be mindful of Him, and He will make straight your paths.”
Proverbs 3:5-6 NAB
2. I see signs everywhere
Whenever I am contemplating something, praying about something, I will see or read something and it is like God saying “I hear you, here is my answer!” Whether it is someone else’s Instagram post, a quote on Pinterest, and more often than not the readings or homily at mass. We just have to open our eyes and let Him come in. It would be so easy to just write off these occurrences as coincidences, but I don’t believe in coincidences. Some people might have dreams, because that is when our mind is relaxed and open and willing to accept His message. I for one have beyond crazy dreams that I am pretty sure do not come from God, but I focus on keeping my mind open and relaxed in waking hours so that I can see the signs and hear His answer.
“For God does speak, once, even twice, though you do not see it: in a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falls upon mortals as they slumber in their beds. It is then he opens their ears.”
Job 33:14-16 NAB
3. I have a sense of peace
After I realize He is trying to tell me something, and I’m like “Oh, hey, this is probably God trying to reach out to me.” I have this overwhelming sense of peace. Like a weight literally being lifted off of my shoulders. If I don’t feel that peace, I either have not understood Him, or it isn’t from God. Because we have to be aware that the enemy will try to pretend to be the light and get in our hearts. As long as we believe, we will be okay.
“in whose case the god of this age has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, so that they may not see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.”
2 Corinthians 4:4 NAB
“And no wonder, for even Satan masquerades as an angel of light. So it is not strange that his ministers also masquerade as ministers of righteousness. Their end will correspond to their deeds.
2 Corinthians 11:14-15 NAB
